Bonnie Davis (born Melba Smith on June 10, 1920, in Bessemer, Alabama) was an American R&B singer who gained popularity in the 1940s. Initially aspiring to become a school teacher, she began her singing career in the late 1930s in New York, working with saxophonist Teddy Hill's band. Together, they had a daughter, Beatrice Hill, born on October 29, 1945, in New York City, who later became a singer. On March 6, 1943, Davis achieved her biggest success with the #1 R&B hit "Don't Stop Now," credited to Bonnie Davis and the Bunny Banks Trio, a move made to bypass union rules during a musicians' strike. The recording featured pianist Clement Moorman, whom Davis later married. The couple continued to perform together in clubs as a duo until the 1970s. Bonnie Davis passed away in August 1976 in New Jersey.
