Booker T. & the M.G.’s were an American instrumental rhythm and blues and soul combo formed in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee. They are best remembered as the in-house backing band for a prominent record label. The band's name combines the first names of organist Booker T. Jones and the acronym for “Memphis Group,” MG. Other members included drummer Al Jackson Jr., guitarist Steve Cropper, and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, with Dunn being replaced by another bassist in 1963. In addition to playing on and producing a significant number of records and collaborating with vocalists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and others, they achieved success as a band with hits such as “Green Onions” (1962) and “Hip Hug-Her” (1967). The group effectively disbanded in the early 1970s when both Cropper and Jones left the label. A planned reunion in 1975 was thwarted by the tragic murder of Jackson in October of that year. The remaining three members reunited several times starting in the late 1980s, often featuring Jackson’s cousin as a drummer. Booker T. & the M.G.'s were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
