Booker T & The MGs is an American instrumental rhythm and blues and soul combo formed in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee. They are best remembered as the in-house backing band of a prominent record label. The band's name combines the first names of organist Booker T. Jones and the acronym for “Memphis Group” (MG). Other members included Steve Cropper (guitar), Al Jackson Jr. (drums), and Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass guitar), who was replaced by another bassist in 1963. In addition to playing on and producing a large number of records with vocalists like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Sam & Dave, they found success as a band with hits such as “Green Onions” (1962) and “Hip Hug-Her” (1967). The band effectively disbanded in the early 1970s, after Cropper and Jones left the label. A planned reunion in 1975 did not occur due to Jackson's murder in October of that year. The remaining members reunited several times since the late 1980s, often with Jackson’s cousin serving as a drummer. Booker T & The MGs were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
