The Boomtown Rats are an Irish rock band formed in 1975 in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, originally taking the name The Nightlife Thugs. They changed their name during the interval of their first gig on October 31st, 1975, inspired by a term for oilfield workers. The original lineup included vocals, lead guitar, keyboard, bass, rhythm guitar, and drums. The band recorded six studio albums and achieved a series of successful singles. Cott left the band in 1981, and they remained together until shortly after the 1985 Live Aid concert, which was organized by Bob Geldof, KBE. The group reformed in 2013, featuring original members along with additional musicians.
