The Boston Pops Orchestra is an American orchestra located in Boston, Massachusetts, known for its focus on light classical and popular music. Established in 1885 as a subsection of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the ensemble has undergone various naming conventions over the years. From 1935 to 1949, it was referred to as the Boston "Pops" Orchestra, with "Pops" in quotes. In 1949, the quotes were dropped, and the name Boston Pops Orchestra became the dominant sleeve name until 1960, and again from 1978 to 2005. The name Boston Pops was used infrequently from 1952 to 1959, becoming the primary sleeve name from 1960 to 1978 and again from 2005 to 2023, although labels typically credited the full name Boston Pops Orchestra throughout these periods.
