Spencer Stephenson, known by his stage name Botany, is a Texas native who has made significant strides in the music scene with a limited but impressive discography. His work blends live instrumentation and dusty samples, drawing influences from hip-hop, beat-heavy electronic music, spiritual jazz, psychedelic folk, and ambient styles. Botany's music ranges from rhythmic, pulsating tracks to free-flowing soundscapes, characterized by a conscious, uplifting, and organic feel. Stephenson began his music production journey as a teenager, inspired by artists like Four Tet, Madlib, and J Dilla. He started sharing his music online in 2008, and his first EP, Feeling Today, was released in 2010 by Austin-based Western Vinyl, featuring vocalist Ashley Rathburn. He has also remixed tracks for artists such as Ryat and Cuushe and contributed to Lushlife's 2012 album, Plateau Vision. After moving to a farm outside Austin, he recorded his full-length debut, Lava Diviner, released in 2013. His 2015 release, Dimming Awe, the Light Is Raw, showcased a hip-hop-oriented sound and featured collaborations with rapper Milo and Leaving Records founder Matthewdavid. In 2016, Botany ventured into cosmic music and free jazz with Deepak Verbera, inspired by artists like Alice Coltrane and Popol Vuh.
