Boukman Eksperyans is a mizik rasin band based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, known for their Grammy-nominated debut album, Vodou Adjae. The band's name honors Dutty Boukman, a voodoo priest who played a pivotal role in the 1791 ceremony that sparked the Haitian Revolution. The second part of their name, "Eksperyans," translates to "experience" in Kreyòl and reflects the band's admiration for Jimi Hendrix's music. Boukman Eksperyans reached the peak of their popularity in 1991, coinciding with the military coup that ousted President Jean Bertrand Aristide, prompting the band to flee into exile. During this time, they actively performed and advocated against the dictatorship of Raoul Cédras. In 1994, following Aristide's return to power, the band returned to Haiti, where they continued to perform at concerts and Carnival celebrations while recording new albums.
