Boy Dirt Car was formed in 1981 by Darren Brown and Eric Lunde after the two met at a Chicago noise-music festival. The band's lineup in 2016 featured Darren Brown, Julie Brown, Josh Mead, and Dylan Ritchie. They played with a revolving-door lineup, primarily consisting of Brown and Lunde, before settling into a semi-stable configuration that included Keith Brammer and Dan Kubinski of Die Kreuzen on various metal percussive instruments and noise-making devices. Boy Dirt Car was soon recognized as America's answer to a certain genre. The band became inactive for many years, during which Eric Lunde released solo records, and Darren Brown pursued other projects.
