Bruno Maderna (April 21, 1920 – November 13, 1973) was an Italian composer and conductor born in Venice, Italy. He played a significant role in the early postwar development of Italian music, contributing as a teacher and conductor. Maderna was instrumental in the early careers of several notable musicians and specialized in the performance of new music, which led him to consider West Germany his second home. He settled in Darmstadt, Germany, after his first visit in 1951. Maderna taught conducting, composition, and analysis at various institutions, including the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, Milan Conservatory, Mozarteum in Salzburg, and Dartington International Summer School in Devon, England. From 1961 to 1966, he served as one of the main directors of the Darmstadt courses. In 1972, he received an Italian Prize, and in 1974, he was posthumously awarded the Beethoven Prize from the city of Bonn.
