John “Buddy” Conner, born and raised in Berkeley, California, was a talented jazz vocalist who made a name for himself by touring with Earl “Fatha” Hines and performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable musicians such as organist Jimmy Witherspoon and tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. In the 1960s, Conner explored R&B, recording several singles, including "Half-Way Loving" for the Galaxy subsidiary Early Bird. This track was later reissued in a slightly remixed form and again under a different name on the California Gold label. After a brief hiatus from the music industry, Conner returned to gain recognition among West Coast jazz fans. He passed away on September 3, 2004, at the age of 74.
