Burl Ives was an American country and folk singer, songwriter, actor, and author, born on June 14, 1909, in Hunt City Township, Illinois. He is said to have given his first professional performance at the age of 4 in 1913, singing "Barbara Allen" at a picnic, which earned him one dollar. Over a career that spanned more than 40 years, Ives recorded numerous albums and singles, with his biggest hit being "A Little Bitty Tear," released by Decca in November 1961. In 1962, he achieved another success with the single "Funny Way of Laughin'," which appeared on the album "It's Just My Funny Way of Laughin'" and won him a Grammy Award for Best Country Western Recording. Ives also made significant contributions to children's music and recorded several religious albums for Word Records, playing a key role in the popularization of folk music. He is remembered for his powerful performances on stage and in film. An Academy Award-winning actor, Broadway performer, and acclaimed folk music singer, Burl Ives passed away from complications of mouth cancer on April 14, 1995, in Anacortes, Washington, at the age of 85.
