Byard Lancaster was an American flute and saxophonist known for his work in free jazz, avant-garde, and improvisational music, infused with soul and blues influences. Born on August 6, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began his career in the mid-1960s and collaborated with various artists throughout his life. In addition to his performance skills, Byard studied piano, singing, composing, arranging, and conducting. He passed away on August 23, 2012, in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania.
