Byard Lancaster was an American flute and saxophonist known for his contributions to free jazz, avant-garde music, and improvisation, while also incorporating elements of soul and blues into his work. Born on August 6, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began his career in the mid-1960s and collaborated with various artists throughout his life. Lancaster also studied piano, singing, composing, arranging, and conducting. He passed away on August 23, 2012, in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania.
