Byron Lee was a Jamaican bassist, pianist, band leader, and producer, born on June 27, 1935, in Christiana, Manchester Parish, Jamaica. He created the famous group "the Dragonaires" in 1957, named after the coat of arms of his college, which features a dragon. In 1969, he established a world-renowned music entity and ran several labels. Lee was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government in 1982 for his contributions to music and received the Order of Jamaica on October 24, 2008, while in his hospital bed. He also launched the annual Jamaica carnival in 1990 and appeared with The Dragonaires in the James Bond film "Dr. No." Byron Lee passed away on November 4, 2008, in Kingston, Jamaica.
