Caliph8 is a composer and live performer based in Manila, active for 19 years within the local outsider culture. He is known for bridging street sensibilities with experimentation, creating a new cultural syntax from the remnants of existing sounds. His primary tool is the MPC, which he uses to craft an arsenal of beats, one-note samples, and deconstructed audio cut-and-paste sound collages. As a sound creator and vinyl archivist, Caliph8's musical background encompasses a wide range of genres, including true school hip-hop, experimental, folk, no wave, sound art, soul, rare grooves, exotica, kraut rock, jazz, and psychedelia. He combines these elements to produce a hybrid sound that delivers a gut-wrenching aural experience, often leaving listeners both dumbfounded and mind-expanded. In 2013, he released a beat tape titled “Derelict Features of the Domain” on the SVBKVLT label in Shanghai, as well as the album “Stillborn Etudes” on Dub Temple Records in Brisbane. His most recent release is the album “REALIZED PATTERNS & SPLINTERED SEQUENCES” in CD format on O-RICH in Japan.
