Calvin Scott, born on January 6, 1938, in Tuskegee, Alabama, is a blind soul singer and pianist. He began his musical journey at the age of five and first gained recognition as a partner of Clarence Carter while attending a school for the blind in Talladega. The duo secured a record deal with Fairlane in 1961, later moving to Duke Records. In 1965, they recorded several songs at Muscle Shoals studios under the name Clarence & Calvin, including the ballad “Step by Step,” which received national attention through Atlantic Records. After performing regularly in Birmingham in 1966, Scott's partnership with Carter ended following a serious car accident that led to legal disputes over medical expenses. Upon recovery, Scott transitioned to playing the organ, formed his own band, and performed throughout the South. He signed a solo deal with Atlantic, recording four songs between 1968 and 1969, before moving to Stax in 1971. The following year, he released his only full-length album, I'm Not Blind, I Just Can’t See, produced by Clarence Paul and featuring members of the Jazz Crusaders. Disappointed by the lack of promotion for his singles “Shame on the Family Name” and “A Sadness for Things,” Scott left the music industry and returned to Alabama, where he took a job with the state government while continuing to perform locally.
