Camouflage is a German synth-pop band formed in Bietigheim-Bissingen by four friends: Heiko Maile, Oliver Kreyssig, Marcus Meyn, and Martin Kähling, who left the band in 1984. The band originally started as "Licensed Technology" in 1983 and later changed their name to "Camouflage," inspired by a song of the same name by a Japanese group. They made their first local live appearance in 1984 and recorded two demo cassettes the following year, which they sent to several record companies. In 1986, one of these tapes was submitted to a talent search by Hessischen Rundfunk (Hessen Radio), where Camouflage won first place. This recognition led to the small Frankfurt record label "Westside" discovering the band. They reworked and newly recorded the song "The Great Commandment," which attracted interest from several larger record companies, prompting the band to sign with one of them after careful consideration.
