Candi Staton, born on March 13, 1940, in Hanceville, Alabama, is a renowned soul, R&B, disco, and gospel singer, as well as a record label owner. She gained early recognition when she and her sister Maggie sang an impromptu song in church, leading to the formation of a group by their pastor, Bishop M.L. Jewell, which included Naomi Harrison. Candi left the group at the age of seventeen, partly on the advice of others. In 1968, she recorded a duet with country singer Billy Walker titled "The Judgement," but it did not achieve success. Her big break came after a dare from her brother to perform on amateur night at the 27/28 Club in Birmingham, where she sang "Do Right Woman" and won a booking to open for an R&B singer, who invited her to tour with him and eventually led her to sign with a record label. In 1969, she debuted and quickly became known as the "First Lady of Southern Soul," scoring hits with R&B covers of country songs. In 1974, Candi signed with Warner Bros. and began producing dance music with powerful ballads. Her 1976 hit, a song about a neglected housewife, became her biggest U.S. success, topping the R&B chart and reaching #20 on the Pop chart and #2 in England.
