Candy And The Kisses was a girl group from Port Richmond, NY, active in the 1960s. The group comprised sisters Beryl Candy Nelson and Suzanne Nelson, along with their friend Jeanette Johnson. They were discovered with their single "The 81 / Two Happy People" in 1964, which became their biggest record, reaching #37 on Canada's CHUM Charts on January 4, 1965, although it did not make the Top 40 in the U.S. Candy Nelson retired in 1968, and the group disbanded the following year. According to a bio published in the December 19, 1964 edition of Billboard magazine, Suzanne Nelson, 18, was a recent graduate of Port Richmond High School and planned to become a registered nurse. Her sister, 17-year-old Candy Nelson, was a senior at the same high school and sang in the St. Phillips Baptist Church choir, where their father served as a Deacon. Jeanette Johnson, also 18, was a graduate of Port Richmond High School and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York on a scholarship. At the time of the article, their single "The 81" was ranked No. 53 on Billboard's Hot 100.
