Cannonball Adderley was a prominent alto saxophonist who led the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, featuring his brother Nat Adderley on cornet. Initially, his first quintet struggled to find success; however, after departing from Miles Davis' group, he formed a new quintet with his brother that achieved greater acclaim. This ensemble eventually evolved into the Cannonball Adderley Sextet and included notable musicians such as pianists Bobby Timmons, Victor Feldman, Joe Zawinul, Hal Galper, Michael Wolff, George Duke, Wynton Kelly, and Bill Evans; bassists Ray Brown, Sam Jones, Walter Booker, and Victor Gaskin; drummers Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy; and saxophonists Charles Lloyd and Yusef Lateef. By the late 1960s, the sextet gained crossover success with pop audiences while maintaining their artistic integrity.
