Captain Beefheart, born Don Van Vliet on January 15, 1941, in Glendale, California, was a multifaceted artist known for his work as a vocalist, harp-player, saxophonist, flautist, songwriter, lyricist, poet, and painter. He led "Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band," recording a dozen official albums, along with several live releases. His career was closely linked with other artists, and in 1982, he retired to focus on painting full-time with his wife. A passionate conservationist, he maintained a strong affinity for wildlife throughout his life. Van Vliet enjoyed a successful painting career, exhibiting in galleries across New York, the UK, and Europe. He passed away on December 17, 2010, in Arcata, California, due to complications from multiple sclerosis. His first recorded appearance was "A Low Forceps Delivery," featuring Don Glen Vliet, at Glendale Research Hospital on January 15, 1941.
