Captain Mosez, whose real name is Moses Mafiri, emerged in the music scene in 1985 when he recorded two tracks, ‘Fly Cherry Fly’ and ‘Hey! Hey! Hey!’, at EMI Studios in Johannesburg. Collaborating with producer Selwyn Shandel, these tracks showcased the diverse international influences that characterized South Africa's developing ‘bubblegum’ sound, including Italo disco, electro-funk, and rock. Shandel recalls Moses as a quiet, talented, and gentle individual, known for his excellent melodies and lyrical concepts, despite not having a strong voice. After their session, Moses did not release any further music as Captain Mosez but later joined the backing band of the internationally acclaimed artist Vusi Mahlasela.
