Carl Burton Stokes (June 21, 1927 – April 3, 1996) was an American politician and diplomat affiliated with the Democratic Party. He made history by becoming the first black elected mayor of a major U.S. city when he was elected as the 51st mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, on November 7, 1967, and took office on January 1, 1968.
