Carl Edward Sagan (November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, astrochemist, author, and a prominent popularizer of astronomy and astrophysics. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sagan was a pioneer in exobiology and advocated for the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He gained worldwide fame for his popular science books and for co-writing and presenting the acclaimed 1980 television series "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage," which reached over 500 million viewers in more than 60 countries. Accompanying the series was a book he published. Sagan also authored the novel "Contact," which inspired the 1997 film of the same name. One of his final works was "Pale Blue Dot." Throughout his career, he published over 600 scientific papers and popular articles and was involved in the authorship, co-authorship, or editing of more than 20 books.
