Carlos Guzmán, born Margarito in Chihuahua on February 22, 1940, grew up in a large family with 11 siblings and three additional children. His passion for music began at an early age, singing at home and participating in local talent shows, where he often performed Isidro Lopez's "Mala Cara," earning him the nickname "Mala Cara" among theatergoers. At 16, Carlos's life changed when he was invited to sing on stage for Isidro Lopez y su orquesta, which led to a paying gig with Los Continentales. He later recorded with Oscar Hernandez y Sus Alegres Del Valle around 1960. While still using his birth name, he adopted the name Carlos after a chance encounter at the Ranchito Club in San Antonio, where patrons began calling him by that name. Carlos formed a group that initially went by Carlos Guzmán y su conjunto, later becoming known as Carlos Guzmán y Los Fabulosos Cuatro. The original lineup included Carlos on vocals, Ramiro "Snowball" De La Cruz on guitar, Armando Hinojosa Jr. on bass, Mel Villarreal on accordion, and Balde Muñoz on drums. They blended traditional conjunto music with orchestral elements, creating a distinct sound that set them apart from their contemporaries.
