Cartola, born Angenor de Oliveira on October 11, 1908, in Rio de Janeiro, was a Brazilian composer, singer, and guitarist recognized as one of the most important figures in samba. He was a founding member of the samba school and played a key role in shaping the genre. His compositions, known for their poetic lyrics and sophisticated melodies, include classics such as "O Mundo É Um Moinho," "As Rosas Não Falam," and "Alvorada." Despite experiencing years away from music, he reemerged in the 1970s with a series of acclaimed albums that solidified his status as a major influence on Brazilian popular music.
