Cass Elliott, born on September 19, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland, was a renowned US singer best known as a member of the iconic group The Mamas and The Papas. She began her musical career in 1963 as part of a folk group and later joined the Mugwumps in 1964-65. In 1965, she teamed up with former members of the Mugwumps, along with his wife, and formed The Mamas and The Papas, taking on the nickname Mama Cass. She is credited with creating the group's name while watching a TV program with her bandmates during a temporary stay in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1970, she recorded an album with another artist. Although some of her releases were still credited to Mama Cass Elliot, she began using her original stage name, Cass Elliot, around this time. Cass was the mother of Owen Elliott-Kugell and the older sister of singer Leah Kunkel. She passed away on July 29, 1974, in London, England, due to a heart attack.
