Catherine Ribeiro & Alpes was a French experimental progressive group active from 1970 to 1980, evolving from a short-lived outfit formed in 1969. The group was fronted by singer and lyricist Catherine Ribeiro, who was born to Portuguese parents in Lyon. Alpes served as the multi-instrumental backing band, led by the main composer and featuring a rotating roster of musicians over the years. Their music blended folk and psychedelic influences with avant-garde and space-rock elements, often incorporating unique homemade instruments such as the Cosmophone (a guitar and lyre hybrid), Percuphone (a mechanical rhythm machine), and Orgolia (a large metallic violin), among other inventions.
