Cesária Évora was an internationally acclaimed singer from Cape Verde, born on August 27, 1941, in Mindelo, São Vicente. Known as the "barefoot diva" for her performances without shoes, she was the most recognized performer of Morna, a genre characterized by songs of sadness, as well as the uptempo Coladeira. Évora primarily sang in Cape Verdean Creole and occasionally in Portuguese. Her recording career gained momentum in the 1980s, leading her to move to Portugal. In her later years, she began incorporating more Cuban rhythms into her music. Cesária Évora passed away on December 17, 2011, in Mindelo, São Vicente.
