Césaria Évora, born on August 27, 1941, in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde, was an internationally acclaimed singer known for her unique blend of musical styles, including the upbeat Coladeira and the more melancholic Morna, both originating from Cape Verde. Renowned as the "barefoot diva" for her signature performances without shoes, she became the best-known interpreter of Morna. Throughout her career, she primarily sang in Cape Verdean Creole, occasionally using Portuguese. Évora relocated to Portugal in the 1980s as her recording career gained momentum, and in her later years, she incorporated more Cuban rhythms into her music. She passed away on December 17, 2011, in her hometown of Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde.
