Chão e Chinelo, formed in Recife in 1995, is a Brazilian ensemble deeply rooted in the rich musical traditions of Pernambuco. The group's lineup includes Márcio Costa (vocals, matraca, pandeiro, baje), Guilherme Medeiros (vocals, bombo 20", triângulo mineiro, maracas), Maciel Salu (vocals, rabeca, pandeiro, gaita, surrão), Nilton Jr. (vocals, guitar, agogô, gonguê, baje, maraca, flauta hopi), Caçapa (vocals, 10-string viola, zabumba, bombo 20", maracas), and Gustavo Vilar (vocals, pandeiro, palmas, mineiro, surrão, maracas). Their music is a vibrant fusion of regional rhythms such as coco, maracatu de baque-solto, indigenous melodies, baião, and toada de cavalo-marinho. The collaboration with the late percussion virtuoso Naná Vasconcelos, renowned for his mastery of the berimbau and innovative percussion techniques, brought a unique depth to their sound. Vasconcelos, a recipient of eight Grammy Awards, was celebrated for his ability to blend traditional Brazilian rhythms with jazz and world music. Together, Chão e Chinelo and Naná Vasconcelos created a compelling musical experience that honors and revitalizes Brazil's diverse cultural heritage.
