Chairmen of the Board is an American soul music vocal group that was primarily active in the 1970s and continues to tour. The group was formed when a member left in 1967 to create their own record label, teaming up with Eddie Custis and a Canadian-born artist as the flagship act, adopting the name "Chairmen of the Board." Custis departed after the release of their second album. While all members had opportunities to take the lead vocals, the group's biggest hit, "Give Me Just a Little More Time," released in December 1969, prominently featured Johnson's distinctive hiccup-laden style. This song achieved one million sales by May 1970. Johnson's songwriting and vocal style became more prominent in the 1970s, although their second biggest hit, "Pay To The Piper," showcased lead vocals by Danny Woods. In recognition of their contributions to music, the Chairmen of the Board were inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
