Chakk was a band active from 1981 to 1987. Their debut single, "Out Of The Flesh," recorded at a studio and mixed by Alan Cross, reached No. 3 on the UK Indie Chart in Autumn 1984. They followed up with the single "You" / "They Say," which also made it into the Indie Chart top 10 and led to publishing and recording deals with MCA Music. The advance from MCA Records was significant enough to fund the construction of Sheffield's first large commercial recording studio, completed in summer 1985 and designed by Alan Cross, Mark Brydon, and Marcus O'Hagan. Chakk's original sound relied on Alan Cross' four-track tape machine, home-built echo and effects boxes, and a small mixing desk, emphasizing the importance of the studio as an instrument. After the release of their 1986 album "Ten Days in an Elevator," which was recorded at the newly established FON studio, Chakk left MCA due to disappointing sales. They released the "Timebomb" EP on their FON label in autumn 1986 before disbanding the following year. FON Studio continued operations until 1996.
