Chalk Circle was a Canadian college rock band formed in the 1980s, originating from Newcastle, Ontario. The band consisted of lead singer and guitarist Chris Tait, bassist Brad Hopkins, keyboardist Tad Winklarz, and drummer Derrick Murphy. Initially, Hopkins and Tait were part of a group called "The Casualties," which later changed names several times, eventually settling on Chalk Circle, inspired by Bertolt Brecht's play "The Caucasian Chalk Circle." In 1985, they recorded a demo single titled "The World" (b/w "Black Pit") and gained recognition by winning the CASBY Award for Most Promising Non-recording Group. After signing with Duke Street Records, they released their debut EP, "The Great Lake," in 1986, which included the Top 10 single "April Fool" and another hit, "Me, Myself and I." The EP became Duke Street's biggest seller at that time. Their second album, "Mending Wall," released in 1987, was recorded entirely on digital equipment and featured the Top 10 single "This Mourning," a critique of nuclear politics during the late 1980s. The album was later reissued with a cover of T-Rex's "20th Century Boy," which also reached the Top 10 in Canada. Chalk Circle's final album, "As the Crow Flies," was released in 1989 and included the singles "Sons and Daughters"
