Chapterhouse is an English band formed in Reading in 1987, consisting of members Andrew Sherriff (guitar/vocals), Stephen Patman (guitar), Simon Rowe (guitar), Russell Barrett (bass), and Ashley Bates (drums). Initially, the band rehearsed and performed for over a year before recording a demotape. They were initially associated with the British acid rock scene, largely due to their early performances supporting Spacemen 3. However, they later became known as part of the "shoegazer" movement in 1991, alongside bands like Lush, Moose, and Slowdive, characterized by their static live shows and introspective music. After bassist Jon Curtis left to pursue his studies, he was replaced by Russell Barrett. Chapterhouse signed with the newly-formed Dedicated label and released several acclaimed singles, including "Pearl," which reached the UK Top 75 and showcased their signature distorted melodies. In the autumn of 1991, the band set their sights on the American market.
