Charles Brimmer, born on October 10, 1948, grew up in the lower ninth ward of New Orleans. Initially focused on gospel music, he shifted his attention to R&B after being inspired by the sharply dressed performers he saw at the Municipal Auditorium. During his time at St. Augustine High School, he joined his first group, The Ravens, and recorded for Camille Indacon's ABS label, producing two singles, "Now She's Gone, Gone" and "The Glide," which sold three thousand copies each in New Orleans. After high school, Charles joined David Battiste and The Gladiators while pursuing an accounting degree at Southern University. His subsequent records were released on Dave Bartholomew's Broadmoor label, with "The Feeling Is In My Heart" receiving significant airplay and leading to more performance opportunities. However, he grew disenchanted with Broadmoor and ABS due to restrictions on recording a full-length album and passed on the opportunity to record "Groove Me" offered by King Floyd. A chance meeting with Senator Jones led to Charles recording a cover of "Afflicted" for the Hep' Me label. The B-side, "Your So Called Friends," caught the attention of Hi Records, but due to contractual issues, they could not work with him. After Senator Jones had Charles record "God Bless Our Love," it gained traction after being played on WXEL in Slidell, leading to orders for 10,000 copies from distributors. The record was eventually
