Charles Ives was an American modernist composer born on October 20, 1874, in Danbury, Connecticut. He passed away on May 19, 1954, in New York City. Ives is recognized as one of the first American composers of international significance, blending the popular and church-music traditions of his youth with European art music. He was among the pioneers of experimental music, employing techniques such as polytonality, polyrhythm, tone clusters, aleatoric elements, and quarter tones, which anticipated many major musical innovations of the 20th century. Although his music was largely overlooked during his lifetime, his reputation has significantly grown since then.
