Charles Mingus was an American jazz double bass player, pianist, composer, bandleader, and civil rights activist, born on April 22, 1922, in Nogales, Arizona, USA. He passed away on January 5, 1979, in Cuernavaca, Mexico, at the age of 56. Mingus was a pioneer in double bass technique and innovative in his use of overdubbing and cutting-up/reassembling tapes in the studio to create the best recordings. He also authored an autobiographical novel titled "Beneath The Underdog." His death was due to Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease).
