Charles E. Murphy (1933-2005) was a New York City native and lifelong resident known for his work as an artist, Art Director, and Designer. He played a significant role in the creation of album artwork for jazz, easy listening, classical, and pop releases from 1959 through the 1960s on the Records jazz label. His visual design style was heavily influenced by modern art, color theory, and jazz, characterized by vivid colors, geometric shapes, repetition, and painted textures. Murphy served in the U.S. Army and studied Art at the Yale School of Art and Architecture under the esteemed painter and color theorist Josef Albers, commissioning Albers and other artists to create influential illustrations and paintings for several Command albums he art directed. He was dedicated to painting the urban New York City cityscape, culminating in a decades-long series of oils on linen titled “New York Impressions.” Selected works by Murphy are part of the collection at the Museum of the City of New York, and his final solo exhibition took place in 2005 at the National Arts Club.
