**Bio of Charles Spurling** Charles Spurling was born on April 23, 1936, in Lincoln Heights, Hamilton County, Ohio. He faced a challenging upbringing, as his father left when he was young. During his teenage years, Charles was involved in a gang, competing with the Isley Brothers in singing contests on street corners. He was inspired by a singer named McCants, whose voice motivated him to write a song for him, which helped Spurling gain a foothold in the music industry. Spurling recorded his own tracks, including the notable song “She Cried Just a Minute,” which gained popularity on the northern soul scene in England. Known for his tough demeanor, he had several notable encounters, including a confrontation with the Famous Flames, James Brown's group, over a song deal that escalated to a physical struggle. Spurling defended himself with his guitar and later fought James Brown, who was surprised by Spurling's boxing skills. This altercation led to a mutual respect, and Spurling worked with Brown for over four years. Throughout his career, Spurling collaborated with many renowned artists, including Bootsy Collins, Randy Crawford, Marvin Whitney, and the Untouchables, who later became the Ohio Players. Later in life, after undergoing open heart surgery, he gained a new perspective on happiness and success, expressing contentment with his life despite financial struggles. Charles Spurling passed away in December 2014
