Charley Pride was an American country singer, guitarist, and professional baseball player, born on March 18, 1934, in Sledge, Mississippi. He made history as the first African American country music star, achieving an impressive 30 No. 1 hits on the US country charts. In 1972, he won a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Pride was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He passed away on December 12, 2020, in Dallas, Texas.
