Charlie Parker was an American alto saxophonist, composer, and bebop pioneer, born on August 29, 1920, in Kansas City. He passed away on March 12, 1955, in New York City at the age of 34. Widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz saxophonists and musicians in general, Parker was also known by the nickname 'Bird,' a shortening of 'Yardbird,' which he acquired early in his career, with various contradictory stories about its origin. Renowned for his extraordinary speed and virtuosity, Parker introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. He died in the suite of his friend and patron, Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter, at the Stanhope Hotel. The official causes of death included lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, though he also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner mistakenly estimated Parker's age at the time of death to be between 50 and 60 years.
