Charlie Smalls (October 25, 1943 – August 27, 1987) was an American composer and songwriter renowned for his contributions to music and theater. He began showcasing his piano talent at the age of 5 and later attended Juilliard and the High School of Performing Arts. After graduating in 1961, he worked as a pianist with the New York Jazz Repertory Company and toured with notable artists such as Hugh Masekela, Harry Belafonte, and Esther Marrow. In 1967, he made an appearance on "The Monkees Show," where he played piano and conversed with Davy Jones. Smalls also released a single titled "The Buzzard" under the name "C. Smalls & Co." He is perhaps best known for writing the music and lyrics for the 1970s Broadway hit musical "The Wiz," which earned him two Tony Awards.
