Cheryl E. Leonard is a composer and improviser based in California, known for her innovative sound sculptures and instruments crafted from found materials. She holds a BA and MAs in music composition from Hampshire College and Mills College, respectively. Leonard has studied composition and electronic music under notable figures such as Alvin Curran, Chris Brown, George Lewis, Frederic Rzewski, Laeticia Sonami, Salvatore Maccia, and Alan Bonde. Additionally, she has explored performance art with Moira Roth, Carole E. Schneemann, and Betsy Damon. Beyond her musical endeavors, Leonard is a mountaineer, practices aikido, studies Chinese landscape painting, and has a unique collection of pinecones with handles.
