Chessie is a musical project that began in 1993, initiated by Stephen Gardner from Arlington, VA. The project delves into the physical, emotional, and aesthetic dimensions of railways through sound. Gardner, who has extensive experience working for and traveling on railways, processes his railway experiences using various electro-acoustic production methods, including analog tape techniques, acoustic instruments, and sequencer-less recordings. Chessie has released two full-length LPs/CDs: "Signal Series" in 1997 and "Meet" in 1999, along with several singles. In 1998, Gardner was joined full-time by Ben Bailes, a sound engineer and producer based in New York City. The two had started collaborating while Gardner was recording "Meet" and found enjoyment in working together as a duo.
