Chester Smith was an American country singer born on March 29, 1930, in Durant, Oklahoma. In 1935, his family moved to a migrant camp in Tranquility, California. He began his performing career at KMJ Radio in Fresno, California, at the age of 9. When he was 12, the family relocated to Modesto, California, where he regularly performed at KTRB Radio. In 1957, he appeared on KFRE-TV in Fresno and KCRA-TV in Sacramento. In 1959, he worked as a disc jockey on KTRB in Modesto. In 1963, he launched KLOC Radio (920 AM) in Ceres/Modesto, California, which led to his ownership of several television stations in the western United States. Through these stations, he became a founder of the Univision network. Chester Smith passed away on August 8, 2008, at the age of 78.
