Chico Science, born on March 13, 1966, was the frontman of the band Nação Zumbi and a key figure in the Mangue Beat movement from Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil. His career was tragically cut short when he died in a car crash on February 2, 1997. In the early 1980s, he was involved in hip hop and break dance groups, and by the end of the decade, he had joined bands like Orla Orbe and Loustal, drawing inspiration from soul, funk, and hip hop. The fusion of these styles with Northeastern rhythms, particularly maracatu, began in 1991 when he collaborated with the rhythmic group Lamento Negro in Olinda. This led to the formation of Nação Zumbi, which started performing in Recife and Olinda, giving rise to the Mangue Beat movement. In 1993, a brief tour in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte garnered media attention. Their first album, "Da Lama ao Caos," brought national recognition, while the second album, "Afrociberdelia," which incorporated more pop and electronic elements, further established Chico's innovative approach and led to successful tours in Europe and the US. Following his death, Nação Zumbi released a double record in 1998, featuring new songs, live versions, DJ remixes, and the track "Chico – Death of a Rockstar," specially written by Goldie.
