Chief Checker, whose real name is Wilson Williams, hails from Sierra Leone. He moved to Lagos, Nigeria, at a young age, where he immersed himself in the vibrant local music scene, influenced by popular genres such as apala and juju, which focus on percussion and traditional singing. The Nigerian musical landscape of that time was also shaped by external influences, including highlife from Ghana, calypso from the Caribbean, and various Cuban music styles. Chief Checker learned to play bass and drums in a local church before pursuing his studies in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. While in London, he became part of the music scene and developed a unique style he describes as "highlife beat with reggae."
