Chris J, also known as Chris Kowalski, is a Sound Designer, Producer, and Keyboardist based in the Los Angeles area. Originally from Chicago, Chris was influenced by the diverse sounds of his city, including salsa, jazz, new wave, industrial, hip-hop, and the iconic Chicago house sound. He began his musical journey studying classical piano, a pursuit he initially approached with reluctance but later embraced as a passion that shaped his creative success. During his teenage years, Chris developed a deep appreciation for the dark, lush, and soulful synthetic sounds of bands like Depeche Mode, Front 242, and New Order. His foray into electronic music began in the mid-90s while studying improvisational jazz at the DePaul School of Music. Chris's early productions utilized the Demoscene sequencer "Screamtracker," which he later transitioned to Impulse tracker. In 2000, he became an early beta tester for the groundbreaking music production software Reason by Propellerheads. Over the years, Chris has released music on esteemed labels such as Good Looking Records, Covert Operations, Telluric, Svek, Statra, Grayhound, Phuturistic Bluez, Upstairs Recordings, Movim, Gamma Ray, Sensei, and Spaced Out. Currently, he operates as a Freelance Sound Designer and Recordist under his company Analogmad LLC, based in Buffalo, NY.
