Christian Marclay is a London-based artist born in 1955 in San Rafael, California, and raised in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied at the École supérieure d’art visuel and later completed his BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art in the United States. Over the past 35 years, Marclay has explored the fusion of fine art and audio cultures, transforming sounds and music into visible forms through various mediums, including performance, collage, sculpture, installation, photography, and video. His sculptures and installations have been exhibited internationally, and his work has been featured in the Venice Biennales in 1995 and 1999, as well as the Whitney Biennial in 1991. Since 1979, Marclay has integrated music into his work, using phonograph records as “musical instruments” to mix altered records on multiple turntables. He has performed across Europe, Japan, Canada, and the United States, collaborating with numerous composers and musicians. Central to Marclay’s work is the relationship between sound and image. He consistently engages with music and musical instruments, visualizing music through his art. His creations include sculptures made from discarded CDs, melted vinyl records, and sewn record covers, as well as installations featuring musical instruments from museum collections.
